When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them:
“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.”
Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah. ) So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”
My thoughts -
We often lament that we live in a "what have you done for me lately" culture, as though this is some recent phenomenon. Moses had just led his people out of Egypt. God had delivered them. Not only were they released from the bonds of slavery but their enemies were just miraculously slain right in front of them.
Sure, they're grateful for that. They celebrate and sing praises to God. But such a victory, as all things are, is short lived. We only live in the present so three days without water later they're grumbling against Moses. Sure, you led us out of our slavery, but what have you done for us lately?
I want to judge this but I can't bring myself to do it. If I had to go three days without water I think I might be a bit grumpy, too. Now, how bad does "bitter" water have to be for you to not drink it after three days without any? That's another matter...
